Milan’da tekstil işiyle uğraşan zengin bir ailenin hasta olan büyükbabası, işi oğluna ve torununa bıraktığını ilan eder. Evin hanımı Emma (Tilda Swinton) kocasının iş seyahatleri ve kızının okul için evi terk etmesiyle kendini yalnız hissetmeye başlar.
